How to Read Discount Laminate Flooring Ratings and Reviews

Author: Rika Susan. http://www.home- improvement- time.com

A discount laminate flooring installation can be a hugely rewarding DIY project. Not only are these floors much more affordable than real hardwood, but they are easy to install and often come with lengthy warranties. When browsing through your local home improvement store, you are sure to ask yourself: 'How on earth am I supposed to know how to choose a quality discount laminate flooring product? What do I need to look for?'.
Let's see if we can give you some easy-to-follow buying guidelines.
1. Check The AC Rating
- Quality laminate flooring ratings and reviews should always mention the AC rating.- Remember that this isn't a brand-wide rating. It is specific to each line the manufacturer produces.- AC refers to the Abrasion Class. This gives you an indication of the floor's ability to withstand certain traffic levels, scratches, burn marks or its vulnerability in terms of impact.- Don't even consider buying a discount line without an AC rating, as you won't have any idea of how it will hold up in your home.- For residential purposes, you will usually opt for an AC rating of between 1 and 3.- AC1 refers to a floor that can tolerate only light traffic, as in a bedroom.- AC2 is a bit tougher and will be suitable for use in a dining or living room.- AC3 is for heavier residential use and is the most popular choice.- You can also opt for a higher rating, but then the surface may be quite rough on your feet.
2. Concentrate On Core Issues
- Most crucial when it comes to stability and strength, is the core or inner layer.- This will be either a medium density fiber-board (MDF) or high density fiber-board (HDF).- For added moisture resistance and robustness, the core is usually impregnated with a plastic resin such as melamine. This ensures hardness and strength.
3. Wear Layer Wisdom
- The tougher the outer or surface layer, the longer your floors will retain their good looks.- The wear layer usually comes with a coating that is also resin-based for toughness.- Look for aluminum oxide or melamine here for the best results.- The quality of the wear layer determines your discount laminate flooring's ability to resist scratching, fading, staining, moisture, impact and burns.- Be very careful when it comes to cleaning. If you use an abrasive cleaner for instance, you will damage this layer and may even void your warranty.
In addition to these aspects, you will need to understand the different kinds of underlayment, how to use expansion spaces to ensure that the flooring doesn't buckle and how to maximize water resistance when installing a floor in a bathroom or kitchen.
While these floors are definitely low in maintenance, it is also crucial to get to grips with all the facets of cleaning and protecting your new floor covering. If you give these planks a bit of tender loving care, they will retain their good looks for many years to come.
Once you get to know the basics, buying discount laminate flooring won't seem like such a daunting task!

Kitchen Cabinet Lighting With Custom Linear

Author: Russell Neal. http://www.phantomlighting.com

Kitchen cabinets lights were once considered purely functional fixtures whose only purpose was to illuminate shelves and work areas beneath cabinets. This is beginning to change, however, as day’s larger homes and custom floor plans transform the traditional purpose and nature of the kitchen itself.
Today’s kitchen has become more than a food storage and preparation area. It has now evolved into a central gathering place for any variety of home entertainment events. Kitchen cabinet lighting in this setting must meet more than base-level requirements to produce optimal visibility and comfort. It must address certain aesthetic concerns as well such as lighting color and brightness, color rendering of illuminated surface and interior design, and glare free light that will not hurt the eyes of homeowners and guests.
Safety, energy efficiency, and ease of operability are also top concerns when choosing fixtures, as some under cabinet lighting fixtures should be left on throughout the night, and almost all cabinet shelves will have to be adjusted or removed for periodic cleaning.
Kitchen cabinet lights fall into two primary categories: in cabinet lights and under cabinet lights. In cabinet strip lights provide interior lighting for cubic space and shelving. Under cabinet lights provide task lighting for activities done underneath a cabinet, such as food preparation and after-dinner cleanup.
Up until a few years ago, very specific types of kitchen cabinet lights were used for either in cabinet or under cabinet lighting needs. For most under the cabinet or task lighting applications, the puck light was a favorite fixture because it cast a bright circle of light onto the countertop that made it easy to see and work. When electric bills ran too high, fluorescent lamps were often substituted for pucks because of their lower heat output and power saving advantages. It was not uncommon in the 60’s, 70’s to see at least one fluorescent light over the stove.
However, due to more elaborate and ornate kitchen build outs, the dominance of puck and fluorescent under cabinet lights is no longer as absolute as it once was. This is because larger numbers of people are replacing generic counter top materials with custom, more ornate granite and marble. This presents a new dynamic for cabinet lighting manufacturers because these surfaces are highly reflective. Kitchen cabinet lights must now shield the eyes from reflective glare in addition to providing the same levels of light as they did before.
While it is true that most fluorescents are housed in frosted fixtures that minimize glare, they do not render color with enough detail to do justice to the subtle shades and variations that custom counter tops feature. Puck lights, with halogen lamps, render color better, but they are simply too intense and will almost always throw reflected light back into the eyes.
In this type of setting, it is almost always better to go with custom cabinet lights in the form of linear strips. These fixtures add value through both their low profile design and the unique qualities of glare free light they produce as an accent lighting source.
Each custom lighting strip is custom fabricated to exact kitchen cabinet or shelf dimensions. It is virtually invisible to the casual eye and features special shielding that reduces reflective glare to near-undetectable levels.
Linear strips, such as the ones manufactured by Phantom, accommodate a wide variety of festoon bulb options. A very popular bulb type for under cabinet kitchen lighting is xenon. Xenon low voltage lamps render colors at a level almost equivalent to that of sunlight. As a low voltage, dimmable lighting strip, it will bring out the subtlest red of granite and the multi-dimensional hues of marble like no other form of light—at a fraction of the cost of competing linear strip lights.
Linear strips fitted with incandescent festoons are ideally suited for interior kitchen cabinet shelf lighting. Incandescents produce the “whitest” form of light and make everything within the cubic interior of the cabinet clearly visible. Unlike puck lights, they consume virtually no cubic space within cabinets, leaving more room for storage and a more balanced presentation when the cabinet is opened in front of guests.
Restaurants should consider retrofitting any existing kitchen cabinet lights strips with LED replacement festoon lamps. These lamps produce a lumens output equivalent to that of incandescent and fluorescents, but they use 80% less electricity. Although a restaurant kitchen requires little, if any, aesthetic consideration, employee comfort and cost consciousness are of vital importance. Fluorescents emit UV radiation that is never good for anyone’s eyes, and incandescent lights left on for long hours will result in expensive light bills. LED energy saving light bulbs are simply a good investment.
Replacing low voltage festoon lights with a one-time LED light bulb upgrade will bring immediate, recurring, monthly return on investment, and it will create a more comfortable working environment for cooks.
It is also good for residential homeowners to consider installing at least one LED kitchen under cabinet light as a cost-conscious safety measure. This eliminates the need to stumble through a dark kitchen to rely upon the refrigerator light as one’s sole source of illumination, and it adds a bit of comfort as well for the overnight guest who needs a midnight snack.

House Renovation Ideas

Author: Roger Thompson. Roger Thompson advises consumers on HomeImporvement for the portal http://www.dragonrewards.com/browse/all/all/all

There are so many great house renovation ideas out there that you can use, and it really pays to be aware of as many of them as possible before going ahead and doing any house renovations yourself, so that you can be more knowledgeable and informed and also so that you will have a better idea in terms of where to start. Many of them have new bathroom of their dreams and it will be perfect! Did you know that the cost of bathroom renovations will be fully recovered when it's time to sell the property? That is, of course, if the layout and plan have been carried out properly and the finished product is pleasing to the eye.
Not so long ago, most homes possessed a single, strictly functional bathroom and very little emphasis was placed on the decor. Well, those days are definitely gone! The bathroom has now been elevated to the same rank as any other room in the house. Some people will accept no less than a veritable spa that will erase all memories of that old cramped space, while for others, the simple goal of a bathroom renovation is to render this most frequented room more user-friendly.
While planning your made-to-measure bathroom, you'll also need to choose a decorating style: traditional, contemporary or rustic? The choice is important you know! It'll influence your choice of faucets, light fixtures, etc. Ask yourself what you want to add to the bathroom: a separate shower and bath? More storage space under the sink? Isn’t disorder a chronic problem in this particular room? Discover inexpensive and efficient storage solutions. You may want to add a few more light sources. And why not improve the ventilation?
The majority of homeowners say that they want to do house renovations to their bathroom, but simply do not know how to get off the ground. The first step is to analyze the current situation of your bathroom. Determine how rough of shape it is in and how much money you think you would have to invest into it to make a difference. You also want to more specifically determine what type of results you are looking to gain from doing these particular house renovations, and for instance if you think that your bathroom is too small then perhaps you may want to break down an adjoining wall so that you can expand the space. Maybe it is just the color of the bathroom that you are interested in changing or the type of flooring. Make sure that you really put some thought and consideration in here and that you do not make any final decisions until after you have done this.
When it comes to house renovation ideas for the bedroom, you can really have a lot more fun. After all, this is not a room that most people see when they come into your home, and so you can really go all out and do whatever you want here. You do however want to have at least some sort of a theme, and the best idea is to determine a color. Decide on a color that you are going to enjoy and not bore of or regret a couple months down the road. If you already have a bedroom set that you love then maybe pick a color that coordinates well with it.
Regardless of what type of house renovation you are considering, if you really want to make sure that you are going to get it done right then you should speak to a professional, tell them about what you are planning on doing and ask them to give you some information. This way you can be sure that you are on the right track and that you are going about things the right way, especially before you actually spend any money.

Floor And Window Renovation

Author: Roger Thompson. Roger Thompson advises consumers on HomeImporvement for the portalhttp://www.dragonrewards.com/browse/all/all/all

If you are interested in completing some house renovations but are unsure of where to start, then there are a few factors which, if taken into consideration, will help you get off the ground. Remember more than anything, that making yourself educated and informed before beginning any house renovations is critically important, so that you do not take on more than you can handle and so that you are satisfied with the results.

The flooring in a home is not only one of the most aesthetic aspects, but one of the most valuable as well. If you have good, durable flooring, then your home is going to be worth a heck of a lot more on the real estate market. There are so many great options that you have when it comes to flooring, with the two most popular being hardwood flooring and carpet. Every homeowner has their own idea of what is the right type of flooring, and when it comes to hardwood, one of the fan favorites, they help by giving the home a look of luxury and they are also incredibly durable and go with almost any type of décor. They are also one of the easiest types of house renovations to complete, especially if you get the engineered hardwood flooring that you basically just snap into place.

Another of the most popular house renovations involves the renewing of the windows and doors in the home. Again this is more than just aesthetics, as by ensuring that your windows and doors are in top condition and sealed properly, especially in the winter months you will be saving money because less heat will be able to escape out of your home. Windows are especially important to keep on top of, and replacement windows are one of the best investments that any homeowner can make. By including windows as one of your top house renovations priorities, you can save monthly on your heating and cooling costs, and as well add curb appeal to your home with a much improved visual appearance. If the windows face any direction other than north, consider a shade/blind mounted on the inside of the window that can be positioned to filter the light, or pulled up/down entirely. A layered treatment with sheers for light control and fabric panels on either side is another option.

Alternatively, professionally installed window films can filter UV rays while offering a clear view outside. Couple this with a fabric treatment that dresses the window such as a roman or box pleat valance and side panels. Some films allow you to look out while passers-by are unable to look in due to the mirroring effect that occurs from the outside, this is a great option for rooms where security is of the utmost importance such as home offices and family rooms. Bedrooms necessitate the most privacy so do make sure the treatment has complete light control. Use shutters, blinds or shades that specify complete light control for privacy. In addition, have a fabric treatment that flanks the window with perhaps a valance above it.

Vinyl, wood, and aluminum replacement windows are all incredibly popular and very affordable at most locations as well. The installation process is quite simple as well, and all you really need to do here is remove the old window, install the new one, cut the exterior opening, and trim the window. Also remember that if you are ever not comfortable with completing your own house renovations you can call in professionals to do the work for you.

Cheap Mini Blinds: Beautiful Windows On A Budget

Author: Ernest Jarquio. Ernest Jarquio is a successful Webmaster andpublisher of http://www.blinds- n-curtains. com.

Blinds can come in all shapes and sizes. When considering them for a window, you need to make sure that you measure correctly first. Measuring will allow for proper fitting and make the process of installing quick and easy. Almost anyone can hang them up because they are fairly easy to do and require minimal tools. Cheap mini blinds are a great way to decorate your window the way that you want without paying a lot of money.
There are blinds with different designs, different colors, and ones that are made from different materials. Each style can make your room more attractive and can be very beneficial in so many ways. You may choose to purchase them to hang up for privacy, to control the amount of light in a room, to keep out the cold, or simply because they look great in the room.
Color Coordination
Cheap mini blinds can be purchased online or at a store. When you purchase online you will need to have your measurements ready. You can choose to hang your blinds inside the window or outside the window. When you are ready to search for your purchase, take the time to browse the selection to find the right style for your window.
Because they come in so many colors you will want to make sure that you color-coordinate your them with the color used in your room. The room will only look great if you match the colors accurately. When deciding on the color you may want to play it safe and choose a neutral color for your mini blind. That color may be beige, white, eggshell, almond or light brown. Using neutral color will make the color balance out no matter what color your room may be.
Adjusting The Blinds
In order to use the blinds to keep the light out, you may be able to close it in a downward motion or an upward motion. They work great when you work during the night and sleep during the day. If the sunlight comes through your window it may make it difficult to sleep. They would keep enough light out of the room so you can sleep comfortably. When the cold wind is blowing outside they will keep the cool air at the window without allowing it to drift in the room. This can save you a lot of money on your heating bills.
Letting The Light In
Some people may think that mini blinds will not allow enough light to come in and the room will be dark. In order to avoid a dark room keep them pulled up at all times until you need them. That way you will still get the sunlight that you need and have the blinds there when you need them. For a nursery you can add pastel colored ones to offer a soft look when they are closed. No matter what you choose there are cheap mini blinds that would be perfect for your window. You just need to decide what you want.

Advantages of Using a Carpet Underlay

Author: Derek Rogers.

Carpet underlay is a required item to use in a home when laying carpet, according to most housing inspectors. There are several benefits to using carpet underlay that should be considered when you are choosing what type of underlay you will be using. Before we get into the different types though, we are going to look at the advantages of using carpet underlay.
The underlay is a thick pad that goes under the floor which is then securely tacked down.
The thickness of the carpet underlay will determine the amount of noise that you get in your home. For example a thin underlay may allow the upstairs noises to travel through the ceiling which you may also find causes an echo in the room. Therefore the main reason for using a carpet underlay is to try and eliminate this noise as much as possible.
You should also consider the softness of the carpet. A thicker underlay pad will eliminate a lot of noise, but will also provide more between you and the concrete or plywood flooring on the foundation. This allows for more comfort which is a vital point for you to have in your home.
The types of underlay will vary from company to company; this is why it is best to shop around before making any rational decisions. You also have to consider the different thickness of the carpet underlay. Some companies can offer underlay foam with a width of 1.37m which is the same as Softwalk, Step and Sterling.
There is also a thicker underlay available as well as something a little thinner.
The underlay will come in a roll with a normal length of 11 meters in the roll. Most of the carpet underlay is going to be rated for heavy domestic use, general domestic use, or luxury use. Again this all depends on the brand and the thickness of the actual pad.
What it really comes down to when choosing the right underlay is going to be the cost between the brands and your budget. The thicker material will be more expensive than the slimmer materials. The thickest material is a width of 1.37m and a length of 11 m with 9mm thickness. Other thicknesses of carpet underlay vary from 6mm to 7mm.
With the benefits of carpet underlay you definitely want to make sure that you have that option well in hand. As we mentioned above, the cost may make the choice for you, but consider the advantages of sound that will not carry throughout the home. Sometimes saving a little money is not worth it in the long run.
There are more than six different companies offering carpet underlay. You can search out these companies online or find a place that sells them all. By comparing the costs and the thickness you should have some pretty great products to choose from.
To make sure the noise level is kept down to a bare minimum and to ensure you end up with the comfort in your home, look for something that will be at least 7mm thick or more. The width and length will generally be standard.

The hand saw is another accessory to help you cut the floor for each room at a proper length and a straight edge when needed. These tools will range in cost, but are usually around £9.95. Stainless Steel Appliances Make For A Gorgeous Kitchen

Author: Elizabeth Murphy. http://www.kitchena id.ca

Stainless steel kitchen appliances are becoming quite popular in home kitchens, but they have been used for years in commercial kitchens for their usability and longevity. Most people like the stainless steel finish because it looks nice, but there is much more to it than simple good looks.
Metal has a timeless quality to it and stainless steel fits just about any décor. There´s no need to replace your appliances in a few years when the color goes out of style (think avocado and almond colored appliances!) and the stainless feature allows your appliances to stay spotless for years to come.
Benefits of Stainless Steel Appliances
There are plenty of reasons to select stainless steel appliances, including the aesthetic aspect. Here are just a few.
• Easy to clean. With a stainless steel finish, your appliances will always be easy to clean and that will make your entire kitchen look better. Also, you won´t have to worry about chips on the surface.
• Long lasting. Stainless steel will last longer than your average appliance in most cases, which keeps your kitchen nice and neat looking.
• No scratches. Scratches and dings don´t show up in stainless steel like they do with regular enamel, which chips and cracks, looking very ugly after a while. With metal, your kitchen will stay nice and beautiful for years to come.
• You´ll be in style. Did you know that stainless steel finishes make up 40% of appliance sales these days? People love the sleek, stylish look of the metal and its modern qualities.
• It´s safer. Metal is far easier to disinfect than any other surface, so you can do a quick wipe with bleach and not have to worry about germs and bacteria adhering to the surfaces of your appliances.
• No rust. Regular appliances tend to rust, particularly in humid environments, when they get scratched or chipped. Stainless steel appliances prevent this from happening, keeping everything clean looking.
• Time savings. You don´t need to take much time to clean stainless steel appliances. In fact, they practically take care of themselves!
Stainless steel appliances are becoming the standard in new homes. They add a lot to the ambiance of a kitchen and the crisp, clean look of metal really goes with any finish. You can combine it effectively with a sterile type kitchen, with metal countertops and white finish cupboards. Or use stainless steel appliances together with wood finishes for a warmer kitchen. Either way, you´re bound to like the finished effect.
While the cost may be slightly higher, this is offset by how long your stainless steel appliances will look good. Regular, enameled appliances tend to chip and look old long before their mechanical function wears down. You end up having to choose . . . do you keep the funky, ancient looking appliance until it actually stops working, or do you scrap it and get a new one, even though this one still works?
Choosing stainless steel appliances removes this problem. Your appliances will look great longer and this is actually a great way to save money in the long run, since you could very well end up using your appliances for years after an enameled one would have been tossed because it looked nasty.
Stainless steel appliances make your home look better. They boost the beauty factor and are so much easier to take care of that it just makes sense to go with a stainless steel finish. You can expect them to not only improve the look of your kitchen, but last longer, too.

Kitchen Renovation Plan

In an ideal kitchen, room size is of lesser importance. Instead, the key is the efficient use of space. The distance between the three most important elements (the refrigerator, the cooking surface and the sink) mustn’t be too great. Remember the triangle principle whose merits have been praised by kitchen designers. When it comes to our home, we only want what is the best and that is why we fill it with the pieces of furniture that only reflects our own style and fill it with the objects that we love. And when you ask different kinds of people about their favorite area in their homes, one of the most common answers that we could get is the kitchen where everyone could just gather around while enjoying a nice delicious meal.
That is why when we talk about making it look good and updated, one of the first things that would come to our minds is having a great kitchen renovation plan that would make it look nothing but spectacular while at the same time, let us do the cooking and dining with great style and comfort. If you need some of the tips that would make your kitchen renovation plans, here are some of the few good things that should consider doing before jumping in.
What you may want to do when you are having a kitchen renovation plan is to sit down and take the time to think of what you want for your kitchen to look like. List down all the areas that you want to focus on and the kitchen appliances that you think needs to be replaced with new appliances with greater or higher technology that are in trends right now. Aside from that, one of the best ideas that you should keep in mind when it comes to having a great kitchen renovation plan that would not just upgrade the look of your kitchen but reflect your personality is to consult someone, your other family members or your friends about what they think of your ideas. This way, even if you are not having the help of a professional interior designer, you could be sure that your ideas for your kitchen renovation plan and new design is something that your family and friends would appreciate.
Discussing decoration in the planning stage is a good idea, as the addition of elements that are both functional and decorative will have an impact on your plans. For example, certain appliances and other devices will probably be replaced. If this is so, check to see if an outside ventilation outlet will be needed. Get information on the properties and advantages of different types of counters that are on the market. You’ll need to choose among different cupboard types such as melamine, stratified or wood, prefabricated or tailor made with the trends “du jour” into mind. Also, be open to the different kinds of suggestions that may come from them and it would not hurt if you would look into different magazines to give you fresh ideas of design for your kitchen plus, it would give you the option to do some catalog shopping for the materials that you think would be suitable for your new kitchen design. And lastly, when it comes to taking action and starting your kitchen renovation project, you now have to decide whether you will hire a professional help from contractors or go for DIY or do-it-yourself.
